Our prizes and tie break system for the current season is explained on the same page as registration for our GPs, but for clarity, we have set out the rules below: 

In the U18 section there is a cash prize fund which will be split between the top three players based on score. In the event of a tie, the cash prize will be split equally between the relevant players.

In all other sections, there are trophies and medals to be awarded. Since the trophies are pre-prepared we are ONLY able to award these to the top three players in each section based on score. In the event of a tie, the top three will be subsequently decided based on grading performance as per the ECF grading rules and based on those grades used from the start of the tournament. Those players who are tied on score with the top three, but do not qualify for a trophy, will be awarded a medal.

To receive one of these prizes, you must be present at prize giving.

KJCA

Our second GP of the 2014/15 season attracted another excellent turn out with 95 players across 6 sections, many entering their first ever tournament and representing many different schools and counties. The event was held on Sunday 2^nd November at the beautiful school of The Skinner’s School in Royal Tunbridge Wells, West Kent and also doubled as a London Junior qualifier event.

Congratulations to all our players, but in particular the top three and prize winners in each section:

U8: 1^st Harry Saddington (5.5/6), 2^nd equal on point Stakhey Sedykh, Laurence Madgett and Eoin Moore (4/6), with Laurence winning the second place trophy and Stakhey winning the third place trophy on the performance tie breaker.

U10: 1^st Max Wilkinson (5.5/6), 2^nd equal on points Aayash Patel, Charlotte Bruce and Yong Gui Wang (5/6), with Yong winning the second place trophy and Charlotte winning the third place trophy on the performance tie breaker.

U12: 1^st equal on points Viktor Jamroz and Nikhil Chidipothu (5/6) and 3^rd equal on points Mahuaa Verma and Orla Dorman (4.5/6), with Viktor winning the first place trophy, Nikhil winning the second place trophy and Mahuaa winning the third place trophy on the performance tie breaker.

U14 (merged with the U18s): 1^st Alejandro Ito-Aramendia (3/5), 2^nd Aurideep Nayak (2.5/5), 3^rd equal Kiran Shiatis and Charlie Metcalfe (2/5) with Kiran winning the third place trophy on the performance tie breaker, though special mention must go to Charlie who as an U10 was playing in his first U14 / U18 section and achieved a hugely impressive 2 points..

U18: 1^st equal Rohan Shiatis and Anantha Anilkumar (4.5 / 5) and 3^rd equal Jacob Watson and Mikey Watson (3/5)

Well done to those Kent juniors taking part in their first J4NCL weekend on the 4-5 October 2014 in Daventry.   This competition is a team event, with four boards per team, and comprises of five rounds of long-play games over the weekend. There are three weekends throughout the season and teams from across the country compete.

 KJCA entered two teams into the first weekend tournament. 

The KJCA Kings were made up of Michael Green (for the Sunday only) Emily Green, Ranesh Ratnesan, Rajeiv Ratnesan and a guest player from Berkshire, Nikhil Kadambadi.

The Kings started with an impressive 3½ -½ in the first round and a 4-0 win in the second round.  However, the third round proved more difficult, with a close loss of 1½ -2½ to the team that ended up in first position.

The Sunday started with a change of players, as Michael Green came into the board 1 slot and the others moved down.   Continuing their great form, the Kings won round four with a score of 4-0 and then drew 2-2 in round five.

All in all a great result for the KJCA Kings who ended the weekend in joint 3^rd place and winning a trophy. They also gained a high GP score of 15 points to take into the next two tournaments.  

The KJCA Kestrels were made up of Mikey Watson, Jacob Watson, Charlie Metcalfe and Radha Ratnesan.

The young Kestrels started well with an impressive win in the first round over a team of higher graded players from the Midlands.  Rounds two and three proved more difficult, and they ended the first day a little disappointed but still able to raise a smile and enjoy a meal out together. 

Bright and refreshed on the Sunday morning, the fourth round was a great result for the KJCA Kestrels with a 4-0 win against a team from Wales.  They also managed to win the final round with a score of 2½ - 1½.  

Overall the KJCA Kestrel finished in joint 4^th position with a number of other teams. Their GP score was 10 points to carry forward.

It was a fun weekend, meeting up with lots of chess friends from around the country and playing some quality games in a high level national competition. All the players are all looking forward to the next J4NCL weekend and hope to improve on their scores.

Finally a mention for Kartik Velayudham, who was also competing at the J4NCL tournament as a guest player for one of the Midlands teams, and played some quality games on their board two.

ACADEMY FOR CHESS EXCELLENCE AND SKILLS

is please to announce its 8th Grand Master Chess training camp with GM Chris Ward, Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th October, 10am to 4pm (arrival at 9:30am).

GM Chris Ward, Ian Snape, Kevin Bailey and Rohan Shiatis will work with small groups of children to improve their chess awareness and skill in a fun environment.

We aim for small groups of about 10 so that we can dedicate enough attention to everyone, from experienced county players to beginners. Children will be divided in four skill groups according to ECF rating and chess experience.

The cost will be £35 per child per day (£30 per child if booking 2 or more siblings).

If booking for both days, the cost is reduced to £30 per child per day (£25 per day if booking two or more siblings for both days).

Some of our Kent Juniors were playing in 4NCL rapid play event on Saturday 4^th and Sunday 5^th October 2014.

KJCA Knights won the junior team prize for the 4NCL rapid play and came 14th overall out of 27 teams. The team (in board order) comprised of Anantha Anilkumar, Michael Green, Rohan Bansal and Francesco Bernardini. Of particular note, Michael Green and Rohan Bansal won in the first round against players graded 199 and 178 respectively and in round 3 Anantha won against a player graded 243. In the last round KJCA Knights played a senior KJCA team ("KJCA Bald Eagles") made up of Luca Bernardini, myself, Bernard Klingher and Susan Green; our juniors won 4-0.

Kent fielded an U14 and an U18 at this year’s NYCA which was held in Northampton on 28th September 2014

U14

Kent finished third with 25 points with Sussex and Cheshire and North Wales finishing joint first with 28.5. 

Three players had the perfect score in this section, Jackson Wen (board 2), Rajeiv Ratnesan (board 9), Alejandro Ito-Aramendia (board 10) and three players were just one draw away Freddie Hand (board 3), Francesco Bernardini (board 4) and Jacob Watson (board 11).

It should be noted that two players, Aurideep Nayak (U12) and Charlie Metcalfe (U10) were drafted in to the under 18. Both did fantastically well and Charlie in particular scored an impressive 1.5 out 3, narrowly missing a win through stalemate.

We had to draft in an U12 player Aurideep to play board 5 and an U10 player Charlie Metcalfe to play on board 6, due to some last minute reshuffling.

We are pleased that even with our depleted team we performed well and achieved some extremely credible results.
