Kent Junior Newsround Update no. 18

Well done to both Bobby Akeya-Price and Kartik Velayudham who have both had fantastic December's playing chess.

Bobby came in the top 10 at the world schools event finishing with 5.5 pts out of 9. This fantastic result was soon followed up with a superb joint 3rd place at the London Juniors with 5.5 pts out of 7.

Kartik, who had previously obtained a half norm for England at the Leeds Rapid Play in November 2014, has now achieved his full England norm at the London Juniors. He played in U14 major section beating some of the top players in the section and got 4 and 1/2 out of 6 – taking joint 2nd.

Well done to both.

Kent U14/U130 Team win their first SCCU match against Surrey

Congratulations to the Kent u14/u130 team which took on Surrey at Sevenoaks Primary School on 30th November 2014. as part of the Southern Counties Chess Union 2014/15 junior event.

With the Surrey team full of confidence following their impressive 18.5 to 5.5 win against Sussex earlier in the month, we knew this was not going to be easy and scores were tied at 6 all after the first round.

There was everything to play but the Kent players stepped up to the challenge in style with a hard fought 7.5 - 4.5 win in the second round, making the final score 13.5 - 10.5.

There were some strong performances by all the Kent young guns across all the twelve boards, also by our three reserve and little Scarlet, our team mascot for the day. It was a great day and a big thank you to Jo Wildman for organising the event and for getting our team together. Also to Simon and Samantha Metcalfe as always for the organising the food and drink (especially the lovely cookies which did not last long!!!). A huge thank you to the Surrey team and parents for trekking all the way to the Kent countryside and for putting up such great and spirited opposition. Lastly a big thank you to Sevenoaks Primary School for allowing us the use of their lovely school and to everyone who helped on the day.

Kent come second at the NYCA U12s

Congratulations to the KJCA U12 team who came second at the National Youth Chess Association tournament on Saturday 8th November.

The day started early with a long journey up to Telford.  Several of the team travelled together by train and  despite delays and signal failure somewhere near Birmingham, we luckily managed to arrive at the venue with ten minutes to spare.

Some quality chess in the first round resulted in a score of six and half points, which put us in third place behind Sussex and Cheshire & North Wales.

Then, in the break, we all helped Bobby celebrate his 9th birthday by singing happy birthday and enjoying a piece of birthday cake. A big thanks to his mum for bringing the cake and to Bobby for choosing to play chess for Kent on his special day.

In the second round the team achieved a very impressive score of nine points, bringing us up into second place.

In the third round we gained another seven points.  However Sussex remained very strong throughout the competition and we were unable to catch up with them.

The final scores were:
Sussex 30 ½

Kent 22 ½

Cheshire & North Wales 21

South Wales 16

Manchester  14

Leicestershire  3

An extra well done to Freddie Hand on board one, Mikey Watson on board three,  Aurideep Nayak on board six and Efe Shimwell on board twelve, who won all three of their games and gained a medal.

The players in board order were Freddie Hand, Ximan Mao, Mikey Watson, Guarav Kocher, Bobby Akeya-Price, Aurideep Nayak, Nikhil Chidipothu, Aryan Narayan, Charlie Metcalfe, Mahuaa VermaRikin Parikh and Efe Shimwell.  Mihika Verma also played in the reserve games.

Finally, a mention for Jacob Watson who travelled with the team and, as the only older Kent player at the tournament, played  in the U16 reserve section.  He also scored full points with three wins.

A big thanks to all the parents and players for travelling to Telford and being part of another great result for the Kent teams.

Explanation of Trophies and Cash Prizes awarded at GPs

Our prizes and tie break system for the current season is explained on the same page as registration for our GPs, but for clarity, we have set out the rules below:

In the U18 section there is a cash prize fund which will be split between the top three players based on score. In the event of a tie, the cash prize will be split equally between the relevant players.

In all other sections, there are trophies and medals to be awarded. Since the trophies are pre-prepared we are ONLY able to award these to the top three players in each section based on score. In the event of a tie, the top three will be subsequently decided based on grading performance as per the ECF grading rules and based on those grades used from the start of the tournament. Those players who are tied on score with the top three, but do not qualify for a trophy, will be awarded a medal.

To receive one of these prizes, you must be present at prize giving.

J4NCL - Junior Four Nations Chess League

Well done to those Kent juniors taking part in their first J4NCL weekend on the 4-5 October 2014 in Daventry.   This competition is a team event, with four boards per team, and comprises of five rounds of long-play games over the weekend. There are three weekends throughout the season and teams from across the country compete.

KJCA entered two teams into the first weekend tournament.

The KJCA Kings were made up of Michael Green (for the Sunday only) Emily Green, Ranesh Ratnesan, Rajeiv Ratnesan and a guest player from Berkshire, Nikhil Kadambadi.

The Kings started with an impressive 3½ -½ in the first round and a 4-0 win in the second round.  However, the third round proved more difficult, with a close loss of 1½ -2½ to the team that ended up in first position.

The Sunday started with a change of players, as Michael Green came into the board 1 slot and the others moved down.   Continuing their great form, the Kings won round four with a score of 4-0 and then drew 2-2 in round five.

All in all a great result for the KJCA Kings who ended the weekend in joint 3rd place and winning a trophy. They also gained a high GP score of 15 points to take into the next two tournaments.

The KJCA Kestrels were made up of Mikey Watson, Jacob Watson, Charlie Metcalfe and Radha Ratnesan.

The young Kestrels started well with an impressive win in the first round over a team of higher graded players from the Midlands.  Rounds two and three proved more difficult, and they ended the first day a little disappointed but still able to raise a smile and enjoy a meal out together.

Bright and refreshed on the Sunday morning, the fourth round was a great result for the KJCA Kestrels with a 4-0 win against a team from Wales.  They also managed to win the final round with a score of 2½ - 1½.

Overall the KJCA Kestrel finished in joint 4th position with a number of other teams. Their GP score was 10 points to carry forward.

It was a fun weekend, meeting up with lots of chess friends from around the country and playing some quality games in a high level national competition. All the players are all looking forward to the next J4NCL weekend and hope to improve on their scores.

Finally a mention for Kartik Velayudham, who was also competing at the J4NCL tournament as a guest player for one of the Midlands teams, and played some quality games on their board two.

NYCA U18 and U14 Northampton

Kent fielded an U14 and an U18 at this year’s NYCA which was held in Northampton on 28th September 2014

U14

Kent finished third with 25 points with Sussex and Cheshire and North Wales finishing joint first with 28.5.

Three players had the perfect score in this section, Jackson Wen (board 2), Rajeiv Ratnesan (board 9), Alejandro Ito-Aramendia (board 10) and three players were just one draw away Freddie Hand (board 3), Francesco Bernardini (board 4) and Jacob Watson (board 11).

It should be noted that two players, Aurideep Nayak (U12) and Charlie Metcalfe (U10) were drafted in to the under 18. Both did fantastically well and Charlie in particular scored an impressive 1.5 out 3, narrowly missing a win through stalemate.

Board order: Anantha Anilkumar, Jackson Wen, Freddie Hand, Francesco Bernardini, Ximan Mao, Mikey Watson, Ranesh Ratnesan, Karthik Velayudham, Rajeiv Ratnesan, Alejandro Ito Aramendia, Jacob Watson, Freddie Nunn

U18

We had to draft in an U12 player Aurideep to play board 5 and an U10 player Charlie Metcalfe to play on board 6, due to some last minute reshuffling.

Board order: Patrick Smith, Rohan Bansal (nominated best Kent U18 player on the day for his excellent performance), Michael Green, Jessica Wen, Aurideep Nayak, Charlie Metcalfe

We are pleased that even with our depleted team we performed well and achieved some extremely credible results.

Best wishes to all,

Anil
