London Junior Chess Championships 2015
Well done to all our Kent Juniors who travelled to Harrow to compete in this national level competition. As always, the standard in all sections was very high, however every one of our players proved they were up to the challenge.
Congratulations to Shlok Verma, who came joint 2nd with a fantastic score of 6/7 and to James Merriman who came joint 4th with a score of 5½/7.
Other young players representing Kent were: Shreyas Royal, Stakhey Sedykh, Arthur Chokovsky, Raghav Vaidya, Herb Balaam, Ismail Longia-Zaidi and Zeno Burns.
U10 Minor: Well done to Danny Oprea, who came joint 4th got a score of 5/7.
Also playing in this sections were: Jai Singh Chaturvedi, Iris Davies, Suriya, Velayudham, Raghav Vaidya, Madhav Suraj and Laura Holmes.
Harrow U12 Qualifier: Well done to Nikhil Chidipothu who came second with a score of 4½/6.
Also playing well in this section were Orla Dorman and Jai Singh Chaturvedi.

Kent Junior wins the Hong Kong U9 Championships
GP3 at Gravesend Grammar
Thanks to all players, parents and carers who came along to GP3, which was held on Sunday 15th November at Gravesend Grammar School for Boys.
The top three in each section were as follows:
U9: 1st equal Raghav Vaidya, Harry Saddington and George Allen (5/6)
U11: 1st equal Lakshya Lokwani, Shahjahon Saidmurodov, Samuel Lewington and Eoin Moore (5/6)
U14: 1st equal Alex Thompson and Alex Garfield (4/5), 3rd Orla Dorman (3.5/5)
U18: 1st Anantha Anilkumar (4.5/5), 2nd Alexander Selway (4/5), 3rd Mikey Watson (3.5/5)
The best scoring primary school on the day (top three raw scores from pupils at that school) was Eltham College Junior and the best scoring secondary school was The Judd School.
Well done to everyone who played. We hope you all enjoyed the day and look forward to welcoming you to more of the KJCA tournaments throughout the season.
A big thank you to all the organisers and volunteers who ensured that the day ran smoothly and to Gravesend Grammar School for Boys for use of their school.
The next KJCA event will be GP4 to be held at the Cornwallis Academy, Maidstone on Sunday 17th January.

Well done to the U12 & U16 teams at the NYCA
Well done to all the Kent Junior who played in the National Youth Chess Association U12 and U16 tournaments on Saturday 7th November.
The U16 team: Anantha Anilkumar, Francesco Bernardini, Jacob Watson, Aurideep Nayak, Alex Thompson, Mikayel Suvaryan, Ansh Batura and Siddarth Nair.
The U12 team : Ximan Mao, Mikey Watson, Bobby Akeya-Price, Nikhil Chidipothu, Charlie Metcalfe, Mahuaa Verma, Aryan Narayan, David Dallakyan, Ciaran Brightly-Davis, Ben Barton, Charlotte Bruce and Aditya Jain. Mihika Verma also played in the reserve section.
The day started early with the long journey up to Telford. Several of the team travelled together by train and unfortunately came up against the usual delays, so arrived at the tournament ten minutes after the clock had started ticking in the first round.
However, our keen young players didn't let this put them off, finishing the first round with a score of 6.5/12 for the U12s, putting them in second position, and the U16s gained a impressive 6.5/8 and led the competition.
The second round proved tough for the U16s who played head to head against Sussex and only secured 1 point. However, the U12s improved their scores and gained 10.5/12.
Then, re-invigorated by delicious slabs of Bobby's birthday cake, both teams produced their best chess in the third round. The U12s scored 10.5/12 to finish a magnificent 2nd overall and the U16s fought tenaciously against the ultimate winners, Cheshire & North Wales.

Kent Juniors at the World Youth Chess Championships
Well done to the four Kent juniors who represented England in the World Youth Chess Championship at Halkidiki,Greece from 24th October to 5th November.
They included the under 14 English Youth Chess Champion Girinath Haridas,, 2014 under 12 British Champion Anantha Anilkumar, under 10 British runner up, Ranesh Ratnesan and under 8-year-old Girls’ Champion, Radha Ratnesan.
These players were selected by the English Chess Federation after demonstrating exceptional ability based on grade, rating and/or performance.
WYCC is one of the major international junior championships in the season. It was a very intense and well attended competition, with over 3000 players from different countries across the world.
Girinath and Anantha played in the under 14 open section and Ranesh played in the under 10 open section. Radha played in the under 8 girls sections.
All the Kent players managed to do well to improve their ratings and rankings.
Ranesh leading the way with 6 points, Girinath following with 5.5, Anantha with 5 and Radha finishing on 4.5.
Kent Coach GM John Emms was one of the ECF coaches for this event.
Overall it was an exciting opportunity for all our young players. They played chess at a very high international standard and benefitted from the quality coaching they received and the fantastic opportunity to be part of the England team.

Entries on the day are discouraged, as this delays the start of our tournament.
We are planning to start the first round promptly at 9.30am. Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time to allow the children to be taking their seats at 9.20am.
Please remember that parents and carers have sole responsibility for their children at all times when not in the playing hall. This includes outside play areas and inside rooms and classrooms, in particular all school property and classroom items must not be touched or damaged.

British Rapidplay
Well done to the four Kent Juniors who travelled up to Leeds over the Halloween weekend to take part in the British Rapidplay tournament.
Charlie Metcalfe and Saahil Bansal both played in the U11 trial qualifier on the Saturday and and Charlie played in the U12 event on the Sunday.Jacob and Mikey Watson both played in the main tournament.
Jacob played in the intermediate section (U145) and also got 6½/11 which secured him a grading prize and also a half-norm for the national junior chess squad. Mikey played in the major (U170) section and got 6½/11 points with some good wins against higher graded adults.
Simul with GM John Emms
Once again a huge thank you to Grandmaster (GM) John Emms, for taking on the enthusiastic ACES Sevenoaks students in two simultaneous exhibitions on 15 and 22 October 2015.
Many of the children put up some stiff opposition, but none
more so than Alex Thompson (aged 13, from The Judd) and Kiran Shiatis KCM (aged
11, from The Judd) who both managed to emerge with hard fought draws. The GM,
however, retained his overall unbeaten record!

many of their chess skills into practice. Thank you also to Rohan Shiatis KCM
for all his help.
First class chess at GP2 - held at Skinners' School, Tunbridge Wells
Thanks to all players, parents and carers who came along to GP2, which was held on Sunday 18th October at Skinners' School in Tunbridge Wells.
This event is also a London Junior qualifier for those in the U8, U10 and U12 sections. Players who achieved 4.5 points or more in the U10 and U12 (4 in the U8)qualify for the major finals, whilst those getting 3.5 or 4 qualify for the minor.
