Friends and Family Tournament

The Friends & Family event hosted by GM Chris Ward, proved a popular event with many parents, first time and some of the more experienced children putting their chess playing skills to the test in a fantastic, fun-filled atmosphere. Each family team was vying to add their name to the prestigious F&F trophy.

Congratulations to all our prize winners:

Freddie Ireson, Nikolas Boettcher and James Merriman all scored 4 out of 5.

Top Junior was Charlie Robb with 4.5 out of 5

Top Adult was Julian Ward with 5 out of 5

The Top Team and winners of the Friends & Family trophy was the Merrimans with 9 points out of 10.

Congratulations to all who took part and especially to GM Chris Ward for hosting.

As always many thanks to the volunteers who give up their time to help run these events and thank you to Rosemead for allowing us to use their lovely school.

GP 4 – Gravesend Grammar School – 2014/15

Our fourth GP of the 2014/15 season attracted another excellent turn out with 72 players participating across 4 sections. The event was held on Sunday 8th February 2015 at Gravesend Grammar School in North Kent.

A special mention must go to the children of Steephill School, a new primary school to the KJCA grand prix circuit, many playing in their first ever competitive tournament. The children conducted themselves with great decorum and maturity throughout the day and showed what a strong force they could be for the future.

A big thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to help out at Gravesend – without your help and support we would not be able to run our GPs.

Congratulations to all the children who played at GP 4, although there were some big rivalries and some tough battles being fought across all the sections, the whole day was conducted in a very strong sporting-like atmosphere.

Special congratulations go in particular to the top three and prize winners in each section:

U9: 1st Mihika Verma (5.5/6), 2nd equal Theodore Panchev, Arjun Javagal, Jai Singh Chaturvedi and Suriya Velayudham (4.5/6), the second place trophy going to Theodore and the third place trophy going to Arjun on the performance tie breaker.

U11: 1st equal David Dallakyan and Saahil Bansal (5.5/6), 3rd Alex Garfield (4.5/6) with David winning the first place trophy on the performance tie breaker.

GM John Emms Plays ACES Sevenoaks children in Simul!

GM John Emms kindly took on the children of ACES Sevenoaks playing them in simultaneous exhibition on Thursday 29th January and Thursday 5th February 2015. The children fought bravely, but the fast moving GM emerged victorious winning 27 games and drawing just the one - against Kiran Shiatis KCM (aged 11). Special mention must also go to the following: Charlie Metcalfe KCM, Isaac Handley and Oliver Dobson (for playing strong games), Iris Davies (winning a rook), William Gough (clever tactic), Marius Kobler (defending well against a tactic).

A big well done to everyone and many apologies for not having the camera with us for week one.

A very big thank you to GM John Emms who was particularly impressed with how well all the children put their chess skills into practice.
