Success for Freddie Hand at the 4NCL Congress

Congratulations to Freddie Hand who achieved his best tournament result to date at the 4NCL Congress at Newport Pagnell over the weekend of 5-6  November 2016.

Freddie finished in a four-way tie for first place in the Open section of the 4NCL.

This is a fantastic result for Freddie who, at 14, has worked hard to developed his chess game and compete at such a high national level.  The Open section included many top-level chess players in the country with several titled players competing.

Freddie was unbeaten and scored four points out of five in this very strong field, finishing with a FIDE performance rating for the event of 2585.  Four of his games were against International Masters’ (IM’s)  rated well over 2400.

Except for the last match, when a game of almost two hours felt like a quick draw, each game lasted around four hours with some exciting finishes including one of Freddie’s opponents letting his time run out as he searched for the best move in the endgame.  Overall all the games were interesting and swung both ways at times.

Freddie is one of the top junior chess players in the country, and the experience gained from competing so well with adult players of this level will be invaluable for the future of his promising chess career.

All at KJCA are proud of his considerable achievements and wish him continued success.
